February 26: The Great Burger Challenge of 2008

One of my speedy teammates and I have decided to challenge each other to sub-5.60 start time next season (My current PB start is 5.64 seconds).

In honour of that challenge, we decided to finish off this week with a little warm up bet: First person to get under 5.70 before the week is out has to buy the other lunch at McDees (the restaurant of choice for future Olympians ... )

So last night I was awake into the wee hours of the morning, visualizing my technique, practicing sprint drills in my basement. This morning I got to the track extra early so that I could get in a thorough warm up. I could smell that bacon cheeseburger with no onions from the top of the hill, and I wasn't about to let it out of my grip.

Oh, who am I kidding? I showed up at the track, pulled on my spandex, touched my toes a few times and pulled out six of my fastest start times this season.

5.71 (Wow ... didn't expect to be that quick without a good warm up ... )

5.73 (Man, again? Maybe I WILL get a burger for lunch today!)

5.72 (Oh, come on! I am soooooo not stopping now ... )

5.67 (Cha-ching! Set another spot for me Ronald ... I am coming for lunch!)

5.68 (WHHOOOHHOOO! Dessert to boot!)

5.67 (That was just to rub it in ... )

OK, seriously. How come no one sent me the memo letting me know that these kinds of starts are very useful during races?

Put it this way: two days ago I did a 5.74 and 5.77 at the provincial championships. And that time I REALLY did get there early and do a full warm up.

Good grief.

Let's all say it in unison "Why? Because normal is overrated!"

Sigh.

But free lunch isn't!

Come on Gruber, step up to the plate! I'll up the ante: Thursday, you, me and a foot long sub on the line.
