November 22, 2006: Getting a job (and a newspaper article about yourself) the Michelle Bartleman way
So on Monday morning, a day after getting back to Squamish, I got on the bus and went downtown to run a few errands, check the mail and go work out. I happened to be walking by the local newspaper office (called The Squamish Chief) so I thought I'd pop in, since I'd been planning to pitch myself as a human interest story for their sports section. Because, you know, who doesn't phone up the newspaper on a regular basis and suggest themselves as relevant and fascinating news fodder?
So I walk into the office, find the sports editor and give her the pitch, which was warmly received. Although if I know my small newspapers, I would wager that I made it on the budget because it's slim pickins’ for story ideas in a town of 15 000 and not because I am Pulitzer prize subject matter …
As we were chatting, the publisher of the paper, whom I had interviewed with back in August, walks up to me and says “You have impeccable timing. I just sent you an e-mail – we are really short on staff for ad design. Can you start in half an hour?”
To which I replied “Sure.”
So I just spent the last three days working full time at The Squamish Chief, and have another week scheduled when I am back in Squamish after this trip. Geez, I can’t believe Jason insists on doing four interviews with a single company to get a job – he really complicates things needlessly …
Oh, and the article about me will be in the Friday paper. Can you believe it? I beat out adult hockey league results and a recap of the high school curling bonspiel! Better watch out Habs ... your days of leading the Gazette’s sports section are nearing their end.
