September 16: Wanna go for a bike ride?

So the other day I went out biking. I'll be honest, it was more out of necessity than anything, since Jason had taken the car to Vancouver before I remembered that I had made an appointment at a spa on the other side of Squamish. And before all you clowns make some smart-aleck remark about how far "the other side of Squamish" is, it's far enough to break a sweat, okay? And before Dad makes some smart-aleck comment about how far that is, far enough okay?

So on the way home, I found a path, and decided that it might be nice to take that route, seeing as the alternative is riding in head-on traffic along the side of a highway under construction. Unknown path, leading into bushes and forest in a small town known to be inhabited by cougars and bears ... hey, why not? It's not like sliding down an icy chute at 120 kph or something crazy.

It was a fine, level dirt path, which eventually forked at a small bridge that crossed a stream. But the bridge was closed because of construction, so I had to take the other path.

So I am biking along this little dirt path, which starting getting narrower and winding through trees and going down hills. And since I am unfamiliar with single track mountain biking etiquette, I was kinda calling out as I rounded corners "umm ... hello ... I am ... here?" Now I am expecting to eventually come to another bridge, since I need to cross the stream to get home. And now I am starting to go faster, and there's more trees and bumps, and I am thinking ... hey, this is kinda fun.

And then I come around a corner and down a hill, to the anticipated bridge.

Oh wait, did I say bridge? I meant SMALL, ROTTING PLANKS OF WOOD THROWN ACROSS A RAGING RIVER.

Okay, so it wasn't exactly raging. Or a river for that matter. Okay, fine, they weren't rotting either. But they were very UNEVEN, and I wasn't expecting them, okay?

Yes. I almost fell in. And yes, I had to walk my bike across the "bridge."

And so, my mountain biking career draws to a close.
